COVID-19 & Inclement Weather Policies Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most State Support Team 1 professional learning opportunities are offered online. When in-person training is necessary, proper sanitation, social distancing, and face covering protocols are utilized. We are carefully monitoring State Support Team health and will notify registrants of any event cancellations or location changes.   When we return to in-person training opportunities, please be mindful of weather conditions. If  hazardous driving conditions exist, call 800-346-8495 after 6:30 a.m. to learn if your workshop is delayed or cancelled. Should you feel conditions are too unsafe to travel, please leave a message to let us know you won’t be attending.
Synergy Ohio 2018 Conference @ Kalahari Resort & Convention Center

The annual Synergy Conference is a joint event of Professionals, Advocates, Resources (PAR) Ohio and the Ohio Self-Determination Association (OSDA). This three-day event will feature sessions on self-advocacy, disability policy updates, and more. People with developmental disabilities, their family members, and DD support professionals are welcome to attend.

2018 AT Vendor Fair @ Hilton Garden Inn
Oct 5 @ 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

The AT Vendor Fair is a full-day event with break-out sessions about specific assistive technology (AT) products. Participants will learn how to use AT to eliminate barriers, attend hands-on product demonstrations, see how AT enhances learning opportunities for individuals and classrooms, and learn about communication and literacy supports for students.

Preschool Supervisor Meeting @ Wood County Educational Service Center
Oct 5 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

The purpose of this meeting is to inform preschool supervisors of early childhood updates and disseminate new early childhood information in order to meet federal IDEA requirements and indicators as they relate to preschool special education indicators 6, 7 and 12 and support the use of standards, curriculum and assessments for all learners. Opportunities to network and participate in topic-specific work groups will be provided.

The meetings will be facilitated by Heather Gaskins, M.F.C.S., and Jackie Jacoby, M.Ed., and Laura Warden, M.A. Three [3] contact hours are available.

Participants can register through the Ohio Department of Education’s STARS portal or use the State Support Team Region 1 online registration form.

Bittersweet Farms Music Vine 2018
Oct 5 @ 5:10 pm – 6:10 pm

Bittersweet is teaming up with local musicians to offer Music Vine 2018, which includes live musical performances every Friday at Bittersweet Farms in Whitehouse. Every Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Music Vine will host different musicians who will provide live entertainment to the individuals who work at Bittersweet Farms. Music Vine is open to all community members and it is free to attend. Community members are invited to bring a lunch, a friend, and some chairs to enjoy some great, local music on Bittersweet’s beautiful 80-acre farm.

During the Friday Music Vines, Bittersweet will be hosting a vendor stand for products produced by Bittersweet Gardens, Bittersweet Creative Arts, and Bittersweet Culinary. Items for sale will include fresh vegetables from the gardens, homemade cookies, shelf stable pesto and tomato chutney, and art items – mixed media pieces, paintings, fused glass, ceramics, and woven items.

The event takes place every Friday beginning at 11:00 a.m. Music Vine will feature local musicians in Bittersweet’s pavilion. There will be live music, dancing, and singing. There will also be a Bittersweet marketplace where music goers may purchase Bittersweet products. Music Vine is free and open to community members.


Unified Flag Football
Oct 7 @ 1:15 pm – 3:00 pm

The Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities and the University of Toledo are sponsoring a unified flag football league with the winning teams playing in the third annual TUB (Toledo Unity Bowl) on November 3, 2018, in the Glass Bowl!

Players must be 18 or over and have a completed application for Lucas County Special Olympics. Players are required to attend a pre-practice day to get them ready for screening day. The pre-practice day will be September 20, 2018, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Larc Lane. The meeting and screening/ tryout is at the University of Toledo on September 30, 2018, from 1:15 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. inside the UT Rec Center.

Games will be played on Sundays in October at the University of Toledo’s Carter Field, located off Douglas Road, on October 7, 21 and 28, from 1:15 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Participants must attend all sessions to stay in the league. Transportation is not provided. The deadline to register is September 7, 2018.

New Special Education Administrators Meetings (Year 1)

The ST ABLE Program is just two years old and for the first time, provides tax-advantaged savings and investment opportunities to individuals with disabilities without risk of losing means-tested benefits. Individuals are able to save above their resource limit for their needs, while still keeping their benefits. Individuals are utilizing STABLE Accounts from all 50 states and have been able to save over 45 Million dollars in the process.

THis free event for parents and professionals is presented by Nicholas J. Hancart, Public Affairs Officer, STABLE Ohio Treasurer of State.

STABLE Accounts are a savings and investment opportunity for individuals with disabilities to help plan for the future, save money they have earned, use on a day to day basis, and many more uses. Additional information can be found online at
