COVID-19 & Inclement Weather Policies Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most State Support Team 1 professional learning opportunities are offered online. When in-person training is necessary, proper sanitation, social distancing, and face covering protocols are utilized. We are carefully monitoring State Support Team health and will notify registrants of any event cancellations or location changes.   When we return to in-person training opportunities, please be mindful of weather conditions. If we you are experiencing hazardous driving conditions, call 800-346-8495 after 6:30 a.m. to learn if your workshop is delayed or cancelled. Myth Busting Transition Assessment @ Virtual

This session focuses on understanding what is (and what is not) the intent of age-appropriate transition assessment, as well as the implementation of transition assessment by a multi-agency team, which includes the family and youth. OPEPP Trauma-Informed Practice Workshop [Kick-off Zoom]

The Ohio Partnership for Excellence in Paraprofessional Preparation (OPEPP), a project within the University of Cincinnati Systems Development & Improvement Center, is providing several online workshops this fall to assist districts in using paraprofessional services more effectively in order to support student learning. Workshops are open to all districts and schools and would be especially useful for educator teams.

Trauma-informed Practice

This four-week workshop helps educators, especially paraprofessionals and teachers, think about ways
to connect trauma-informed practice to high-quality instruction of general education
content. Participants will:

• Identify ways trauma-informed practice can contribute to on-going efforts to promote safe and productive learning environments for all students;
• Describe classroom practices that use trauma-informed practice as a foundation for academic instruction;
• Explain how literacy instruction grounded in the Science of Reading works to off-set damaging effects of trauma; and
• Identify the ways leadership teams (DLTs, BLTs, and TBTs) can tie trauma-informed practice into overall district improvement efforts.

Helping with Instruction

Workshop Description:
This workshop is designed for teacher-paraprofessional teams who seek to understand how
paraprofessionals can expand their role on a team with responsibility for providing instruction. Based on
the principles of Universal Design for Learning, this workshop offers guidance about how paraprofessionals
can collaborate with a supervising teacher and other members of an instructional team to help students
learn. Participants will:

• identify five phases of the instructional cycle;
• understand Universal Design for Learning principles and their impact on student learning;
• apply instructional scaffolding strategies;
• describe learning targets; and
• identify ways to improve students’ study strategies and test-taking skills.

OPEPP Developing Cultural Competency Workshop [Kick-off Zoom]

The Ohio Partnership for Excellence in Paraprofessional Preparation (OPEPP), a project within the University of Cincinnati Systems Development & Improvement Center, is providing several online workshops this fall to assist districts in using paraprofessional services more effectively in order to support student learning. Workshops are open to all districts and schools and would be especially useful for educator teams.

Developing the knowledge and practicing the skills of cultural competency enable all district personnel to relate to people and groups who are culturally diverse, which is critical for the success of all learners. This workshop is designed for all school and district staff as it addresses basic knowledge and skills that are foundational to developing cultural competency. Participants will:

• learn about the meaning of culture and cultural competency;
• explore how their cultural identity informs their cultural perspective and influences their
relationships with others; and
• learn how practicing cultural competency skills can positively impact student learning and
student behavior

Red Ribbon Week
Oct 23 – Oct 31 all-day

Each year, from Oct. 23-31, students in schools across the country show their commitment to a healthy, drug-free lifestyle by wearing or displaying a red ribbon. This annual event offers a great opportunity for schools and communities to raise awareness about drug misuse. Learning communities can virtually promote and support this year’s event with an online toolkit that includes downloadable graphics, student, parent and caregiver pledges and more ideas to encourage community participation.

Access in a Virtual Environment: Proactive Planning to Support Effective Communication for Learners Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing @ Virtual

The classroom has been redefined and has had an impact on learning and connection. For learners who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH), having access to communication options that work provides bridges to learning in every setting. In this session, hear from professionals, families, and learners as they share how to plan ahead for successful virtual learning experiences for learners who are D/HH.

ODE Trauma-Informed Schools Conference @ Virtual

The Ohio Department of Education is excited to host its first Trauma-Informed Schools Conference for Ohio’s educators and community partners so that, together, we can reach each child and help all students reach their fullest potential. This free event will be held virtually on Saturday, November 7.

The conference will:

  1. Provide information and tools that help educators and community partners better understand the impact of trauma on child development and learning
  2. Help educators apply trauma-informed practices at the district, building and classroom levels to best support the whole child
  3. Provide information and knowledge that supports educator self-care and whole child student well-being

Keynotes and presenters include nationally known individuals and Ohio’s educators and community partners who are engaged in these important practices. Presenters will share their knowledge and experience, while participants will have an opportunity to create networks, connections and engage in professional learning. The event offers an opportunity to become engaged in a statewide network of educators and community partners that promote and strengthen the understanding of the impact of trauma on students and educators alike in Ohio’s schools.

Throughout the day, participants will hear opening remarks from Ohio’s education leaders, participate in two keynote presentations and engage in three additional sessions where participants have opportunities to select from 15 presentations, including time to interact during speaker chats and community chats. Continuing education credits are provided for each session attended (if minimum participation is completed).
