COVID-19 & Inclement Weather Policies Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most State Support Team 1 professional learning opportunities are offered online. When in-person training is necessary, proper sanitation, social distancing, and face covering protocols are utilized. We are carefully monitoring State Support Team health and will notify registrants of any event cancellations or location changes.   When we return to in-person training opportunities, please be mindful of weather conditions. If  hazardous driving conditions exist, call 800-346-8495 after 6:30 a.m. to learn if your workshop is delayed or cancelled. Emergent Literacy Series @ Virtual
Jan 22 @ 9:00 am – 2:30 pm

This three-part literacy series is for preschool teachers, paraprofessionals, supervisors, child care workers, kindergarten teachers, and others looking to build emergent literacy skills at the preschool level. The series was created based on current literacy research in conjunction with Ohio’s State Literacy Plan to provide practices to increase literacy for all students, birth through age five.

Series Dates

  • Part 1:     January 22, 2021  |  9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
    • Introduction to Emergent Literacy & Teaching Early Phonological Awareness
      Participants will explore the three components of emergent literacy, with connections to research supporting their use, and learn the significance of, and instructional strategies for developing early phonological awareness in children from birth – age 5.
  • Part 2:     February 12, 2021 |  9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
    • Developing Oral Language and Vocabulary for Emergent Literacy
      Learn the significance of developing oral language and vocabulary in young children, and how to build these skills in multiple environments – home, preschool, and child care centers through formal and informal instructional contexts. Participants will also learn to choose vocabulary from vocabulary rich read-aloud texts to pre-teach prior to shared reading experiences.
  • Part 3:     March 5, 2021 |  9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
    • Building Print Awareness through Interactive Read-Alouds
      Explore the significance of print awareness and how to use read-alouds as a tool for print referencing and building meta-linguistic awareness in young children. Modeling of questioning during interactive read-alouds will be used to demonstrate how to direct young children’s attention specifically to print. Participants will leave with a thorough understanding of how to use read-alouds to teach ALL components of emergent literacy using a variety of texts. Connections will also be made to developing early literacy skills along the language and literacy continuum.

Creating Equitable Classrooms: 3 Keys that Work @ Virtual
Jan 22 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

In this 4-part virtual series, sponsored by State Support Team Region 1 and presented by Cathy J.  Lassiter, Ed.D. Administrators and their Building Leadership Teams (BLT’s) will learn about the keys to creating equitable classrooms where all learners thrive, whether it is face to face or in distance learning.  All sessions will be highly interactive, engaging participants in short reads, group discussions, self-reflections, and implementation planning.  Strategies shared by the presenter will be relevant for teachers and leaders in distance learning environments, face to face classrooms, and any variation of hybrid instruction.

Participants will delve into three main topic areas:

  • Fostering Collective Teacher Efficacy: includes a discussion on what this means and why it is so critical to equity in the classroom
  • Building Teacher Credibility: considers the huge impact of teacher credibility on student learning outcomes and the factors that influence students’ determination of the credibility of their teachers
  • Strengthening Core Instruction: focuses on practices that improve instructional design and delivery for strong Tier 1 instruction

CTE Connect and Communicate – Day 3 of 4 @ Educational Service Center of Lake Erie West
Jan 26 @ 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

The Career Technical Education (CTE) Connect and Communication Network is a year-long professional learning activity for CTE administrator and educator teams to collaborate with teams from other career tech centers, experience coaching designed to support increased partnerships among districts, and provide opportunities to update or create required documents such as policies and procedures manuals and student success plans.

The 2020-2021 series will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on September 29, November 17, January 26, and March 2. The first two sessions will be held virtual.  The last two sessions are scheduled to be held at the Educational Service Center of Lake Erie West in Toledo.  Lunch is not provided. Contact hours [20] are available to participants for complete series attendance.


Session Details:

Session 1: Special Education

September 29, 2020 – Participants will explore the history of IDEA and learn about how educator mindset impacts student performance.

Session 2: Partnerships with Academic, CTE, and Special Education

November 17, 2020 – Teams will explore how academic, CT and Special Education can partner and support each other in increasing student achievement.  Participants will practice looking at barriers to students learning and brainstorming ways to remove those barriers.

Zoom log-in information will be sent out to registered participants prior to the date of the event.

Session 3:  Graduation Plans

January 26, 2021 – Participants will learn about Graduation Plans and why Career Tech Education should be part of the discussion as students create their initial plan in 9th grade.  Team members will brainstorm how to be included in graduation planning and how to include parents in that planning.

Session 4:  Celebration Day!

March 2, 2021 – This session will be celebration day, a time for you to showcase a positive outcome connected to your 8-step action plan, special populations, partnerships, or student achievement.  It will also be a time to learn from other about their successes and lessons learned through their action research.


Team Composition

All teams should include at least one administrator (e.g., CTE superintendent, director, special education leader) and CTE teachers, VOSE or special education intervention specialists, academic teachers, guidance counselors, curriculum specialists, admissions office supervisors, and 504 coordinators.  Teams are encouraged to attend all four sessions of this series.

New Preschool Education Administrator Network: Year 1 of 2 @ Virtual
Jan 26 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

This network is for recently assigned preschool administrators, or administrators wishing to revisit foundational aspects of preschool administration. Participants will dive into the foundational framework of preschool administration to include both early learning and special education federal, state, funding, and quality requirements. Evidence based practices taught will align completion of ETRs and IEPs to influence student achievement. This is a multi-session, 2-year cohort.

During the 2020-21 school year, participants will:

  • identify their current location in the educational cascade, and how roles throughout the cascade differ
  • learn tenants of state and federal mandated requirements and identify how each is represented in their program/school
  • begin to establish skills to self reflect on their progress as an instructional coach and leader
  • draft an internal monitoring plan to align proper implementation of timeline driven requirements through documentation and implementation
  • draft an annual calendar of routine department requirements, responsibilities, best practices, and action

  • This Professional Learning Opportunity is by invitation only.
  • Participants will be asked to complete pre-work to prepare for each session.
  • Registration will be closed after the first session.
  • Participants are expected to make a strong commitment to attending sessions, as content is cumulative.

If your district received a finding on your Special Education Profile or Rating, State Support Team 1 will provide training and support. This session is for those who received findings in Disproportionality (Identification, Placement or Discipline).

PBIS Tier II Training @ Virtual
Jan 28 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

This training is designed for PBIS Tier II teams from buildings implementing Tier I of PBIS with fidelity. Before attending the training, schools must have earned at least a 70% on Tier I of the Tiered Fidelity Inventory (TFI)* within the last year, and their triangle data should indicate at least 80% of their students earning an average of 0-1 behavioral referral per month.

Tier II teams will receive concrete, evidence-based interventions to enhance their PBIS framework to help students, including students with disabilities, manage their behaviors in proactive, positive ways. Participants will learn additional ways to interact with students to help increase positive behavior and create an action plan to begin inclusion of new interventions.

  • The PBIS Tier II training is a series of three events.
  • A TFI should be conducted at  your school prior to attending this training series. Please contact Tamie Cruz, M.A. or your ESC representative to schedule your TFI before the training.

Virtual Family and Community Engagement @ Virtual

The need for family and community engagement and partnership has increased dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic. This virtual network series is designed for administrators and district leaders to explore evidence based practices around family and community engagement.

Each 2-hour session will focus on a particular topic, including:
• An overview of family and community engagement practices, then and now
• Evidence-based strategies and family and community engagement frameworks
• Alignment of family and community engagement with school improvement efforts
• Tools for evaluating family and community engagement

After attending these sessions, participants will be able to:
• Describe evidence based practices to improve family and community engagement in schools
• Create action steps to infuse family and community engagement into their school improvement goals
• Choose and use at least one tool for evaluating family and community engagement in their districts and buildings
• Describe evidence based frameworks for family and community engagement
• Create an action plan for the 2021-2022 school year to align family engagement practices with school improvement plans.
