COVID-19 & Inclement Weather Policies Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most State Support Team 1 professional learning opportunities are offered online. When in-person training is necessary, proper sanitation, social distancing, and face covering protocols are utilized. We are carefully monitoring State Support Team health and will notify registrants of any event cancellations or location changes.   When we return to in-person training opportunities, please be mindful of weather conditions. If  hazardous driving conditions exist, call 800-346-8495 after 6:30 a.m. to learn if your workshop is delayed or cancelled. Should you feel conditions are too unsafe to travel, please leave a message to let us know you won’t be attending.

New Special Education Administrator Network: Year 1 of 2 @ Virtual

New or recently assigned special education administrators, or those responsible for special education administration are invited to participate in these training and networking meetings. This is a multi-session, 2-year cohort. Year one focuses on building building foundation and capacity in your role, while year two centers on using knowledge to impact overall school improvement.

During the 2020-21 school year, participants will:

  • dive into the foundation of special education federal and state requirements, and using IDEA to guide understanding of district- and school-wide policies, procedures, and practices
  • gain foundational knowledge of the law
  • reflect on and evaluate current district special education policies, practices, and processes
  • receive support in navigating timelines and annual requirements
  • be introduced to team participation as instructional leaders
  • move towards monitoring progress throughout the sessions
  • network with other special education leaders for collaboration, learning, and growth
  • access strategies for training staff on providing effective student-focused services
  • build relationships with school improvement consultants
  • receive supplemental coaching to meet the needs of individual district/school improvement/CCIP

 

Please note

  • This professional learning opportunity is available by invitation only.
  • Participants will be asked to complete pre-work to prepare for each session.
  • Registration will be closed after the first session.
  • Participants are expected to make a strong commitment to attending sessions, as content is cumulative.

Cohorts 2 & 3: One Needs Assessment Training @ Virtual
Mar 23 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

The One Needs Assessment  is a comprehensive district needs assessment which replaces the Decision Framework as well as the Comprehensive Needs Assessment that was previously found in the CCIP. This computer-based tool is accessed through the Ohio Portal and provides a structure for collaborative teams to reflect on current practices and data to help develop and prioritize district and buildings critical needs.

As a part of the Ohio Department of Education’s ED STEPS process, districts are assigned to one of three cohorts. Organizations that are a part of Cohort 1 will complete the One Needs Assessment and develop a three year plan beginning this school year. This process must be completed by April 30, 2021.

SST 1 is providing this virtual training to help prepare building teams complete this assessment. The goal of this training is to help collaborative teams become familiar with the One Needs Assessment, begin understand how the team will work together to prioritize critical needs, and prepare for writing the three year plan.

Regional Transition Network @ Virtual

The Regional Transition Network supports schools and cooperating agencies as they work to develop effective transition planning strategies. Through a collaborative effort between State Support Team personnel, guest speakers, and other partners and peers, educators receive coaching to help students prepare for, and achieve successful post-school outcomes in the areas of:

  • competitive integrated employment
  • education/training
  • independent living

Participants will receive important information, news, and updates to improve the fidelity and outcomes of transition planning for students with disabilities, and:

  • explore, identify, and use resources to support writing of compliant transition plans with fidelity
  • develop and maintain partnerships and programming to support transition-age youth with disabilities
  • engage in dialogue and networking opportunities that support cooperative interagency partnerships to promote and support adult behaviors that help to ensure successful post-secondary outcomes for each student

CTE: Career Technical Education Special Education Leaders Meeting @ To Be Announced

The Career Technical Education Special Education Leaders meeting provides an opportunity to receive updates regarding special education as it relates to Career Tech Education and network with other professionals working with students with special needs in career tech.

Walter Horn Burley Award Nominations Due

Honor an exemplary educator, educator team, and/or student with disabilities by nominating them for the 2021 Horn Walter Burley Outstanding Achievement Awards.

Ohio public schools, community schools, career centers, and county boards of developmental disabilities are encouraged to recognize the achievements of Ohio educators and students with disabilities by recommending them for these prestigious state awards.

  • The R.A. Horn Outstanding Achievement Award recognizes the accomplishments of one exemplary special education student from each of Ohio’s 16 State Support Team regions.
  • Franklin B. Walter Outstanding Educator Award is presented to one educator or team from each of Ohio’s 16 State Support Team regions for extraordinary contributions to the education of students with disabilities.
  • In addition, the Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities Executive Committee will select an Ohio parent to receive the Margaret M. Burley Award.

The annual Horn Walter Burley Awards are sponsored by the Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities with assistance from Ohio’s State Support Teams.

Play-Based Assessment @ Virtual

This free three-part professional learning series supports collaboration and authentic assessment practices as part of the play-based assessment during the preschool evaluation process. Designed for preschool special education evaluation transdisciplinary teams, we recommend the full team attend the trainings together.

The sessions will be interactive, and offer recommendations to help grow knowledge, skills, and abilities team members can use to provide an assessment process that is meaningful, supports children and their families, and ensures accurate, reliable data.

SST 1 consultant, Laura Low will challenge teams to evaluate their existing practices, and help you identify actions that can be implemented to improve connected, relevant, and accurate assessment practices through a transdisciplinary team approach.
