COVID-19 & Inclement Weather Policies Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most State Support Team 1 professional learning opportunities are offered online. When in-person training is necessary, proper sanitation, social distancing, and face covering protocols are utilized. We are carefully monitoring State Support Team health and will notify registrants of any event cancellations or location changes.   When we return to in-person training opportunities, please be mindful of weather conditions. If  hazardous driving conditions exist, call 800-346-8495 after 6:30 a.m. to learn if your workshop is delayed or cancelled. Training Summary: Unlike elementary schools, the structures of secondary schools have traditionally not been designed for universal literacy instruction. This two-hour workshop will explore the use of common instructional frameworks and routines as a means of advancing the evidence-based practices of adolescent literacy.

2020-21 PBIS Award Applications Due
May 1 all-day

Schools or districts that choose to complete the PBIS Recognition System Application for 2020-2021 (new or seeking higher level award) must complete the entire application package including the Tiered Fidelity Inventory (TFI) and walkthrough. (The TFI and walkthrough may be done virtually for districts or schools with remote learning.)

Training Summary: At the root of the grades 6-12 literacy standards and adolescent evidence-based practices is a focus on
complex text. Text sets can serve as a means for scaffolding complex text for all learners while also
building background knowledge, vocabulary, comprehension, and motivation for literacy tasks. This two-hour workshop will review frameworks for creating text sets, and also explore examples of existing text sets.

Literacy Leaders Network @ Virtual

The Literacy Leaders Network will take a deep dive into all components of the Literacy Improvement Pathway.

Designed for district leaders, superintendents, curriculum directors, special education directors, principals, and literacy coaches, participants will learn the processes needed to create, update, or improve their district’s literacy plan based solidly in the Science of Reading. Vital tools such as the R-TFI, District Implementation Team/District Leadership Team guidance, decision rules, MTSS, curriculum review and adoption, assessment, and more will be covered.

Training Summary: Motivating and Engaging Adolescents in Literacy Learning is not only one of the Big Ideas of Secondary Reading, it is a recommended evidence-based practice for classroom instruction (I.E.S. Practice Guide, 2008). Participants in this three-hour workshop will examine the research and recommended practices for enhancing intrinsic student motivation and engagement in literacy tasks.

Adolescent Literacy Leaders Network @ Virtual

These virtual, interactive sessions are designed for administrators, curriculum directors, special education directors, and superintendents.

Understanding the importance of literacy as the foundation for learning is the focus these interactive virtual sessions, sponsored by the State Support Team Region 1. Participants will investigate the complex nature of building and advancing literacy skills across all disciplines. This network will explore the practices that address the six essential domains of adolescent literacy instruction. Those which include:

  • Disciplinary literacy
  • Vocabulary
  • Discussion
  • Digital literacy
  • Multiple texts
  • Writing to learn

Administrators will learn instructional strategies that can be implemented the following day as well as develop understanding for guiding principles that will assist in the professional growth of participants. This network will build a solid theoretical framework of adolescent literacy, disciplinary literacy and provide a set of resources for developing and implementing literacy plans.
