Toledo TOPSoccer is a dynamic program for any athlete facing special cognitive, physical and/or emotional challenges, allowing them to experience the game of soccer along with other players in their peer group. Participants of TOPSoccer may include but are not limited to children/adults who are blind, amputees, confined to a wheelchair, emotionally/mentally challenged, children/adults with autism, as well as children/adults with Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, or other conditions that impair mobility, strength, and/or comprehension.
TOPSoccer integrates its participants by using current TFA and non-TFA players, friends and family as “Teammates” to help the participants both on and off the field as needed during TOPSoccer events.
TOPSoccer participants are placed in groups, organized by size, agility, mobility, the ability to follow directions, and lastly by age. The unique benefit to TOPSoccer is no upper age limit and participants may register as young as 5 years old.
Parents who may have thought they would never see their children with different abilities playing a sport or enjoying the social opportunities created through sports, get exactly that with TOPSoccer. Parents are able to relax and enjoy watching their children/adults having fun like their siblings or other children involved in TFA and the game of soccer.
We are incredibly fortunate to have key licensed professionals in the fields of Special Education, Clinical Psychology, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy to work alongside our TFA Coaches and Teammates to make this program a win-win for all involved.

These videos from the National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability for Youth can be a good accompaniment to NDEAM celebrations. In addition to a video about the National Youth Action Council on Transition, there are others featuring young people tackling important issues about living with a disability. These include “411 on Disability Disclosure” and “Making the Move to Managing Your Own Personal Assistance Services.” Both are accompanied by publications that can be downloaded from the website.
Bittersweet is teaming up with local musicians to offer Music Vine 2018, which includes live musical performances every Friday at Bittersweet Farms in Whitehouse. Every Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Music Vine will host different musicians who will provide live entertainment to the individuals who work at Bittersweet Farms. Music Vine is open to all community members and it is free to attend. Community members are invited to bring a lunch, a friend, and some chairs to enjoy some great, local music on Bittersweet’s beautiful 80-acre farm.
During the Friday Music Vines, Bittersweet will be hosting a vendor stand for products produced by Bittersweet Gardens, Bittersweet Creative Arts, and Bittersweet Culinary. Items for sale will include fresh vegetables from the gardens, homemade cookies, shelf stable pesto and tomato chutney, and art items – mixed media pieces, paintings, fused glass, ceramics, and woven items.
The event takes place every Friday beginning at 11:00 a.m. Music Vine will feature local musicians in Bittersweet’s pavilion. There will be live music, dancing, and singing. There will also be a Bittersweet marketplace where music goers may purchase Bittersweet products. Music Vine is free and open to community members.
The Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities and the University of Toledo are sponsoring a unified flag football league with the winning teams playing in the third annual TUB (Toledo Unity Bowl) on November 3, 2018, in the Glass Bowl!
Players must be 18 or over and have a completed application for Lucas County Special Olympics. Players are required to attend a pre-practice day to get them ready for screening day. The pre-practice day will be September 20, 2018, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Larc Lane. The meeting and screening/ tryout is at the University of Toledo on September 30, 2018, from 1:15 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. inside the UT Rec Center.
Games will be played on Sundays in October at the University of Toledo’s Carter Field, located off Douglas Road, on October 7, 21 and 28, from 1:15 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Participants must attend all sessions to stay in the league. Transportation is not provided. The deadline to register is September 7, 2018.

Register now for the 2018 Ohio TESOL Conference, “Breaking through Language Barriers: Success Across Content.” The keynote speaker is President and CEO of the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in Columbus, Dr. Frederic Bertley.
The conference is sponsored by Ohio Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages in conjunction with the Lau Resource Center at the Ohio Department of Education.
