COVID-19 & Inclement Weather Policies Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most State Support Team 1 professional learning opportunities are offered online. When in-person training is necessary, proper sanitation, social distancing, and face covering protocols are utilized. We are carefully monitoring State Support Team health and will notify registrants of any event cancellations or location changes.   When we return to in-person training opportunities, please be mindful of weather conditions. If  hazardous driving conditions exist, call 800-346-8495 after 6:30 a.m. to learn if your workshop is delayed or cancelled. Should you feel conditions are too unsafe to travel, please leave a message to let us know you won’t be attending.
March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. It is a time to increase the public’s awareness and understanding of people who have developmental disabilities so these citizens will have increased access in our communities to employment, education, housing and social opportunities.

Self-Advocate Nate Turner will be a guest Sunday morning on 13abc’s Conklin and Company. The program airs at 11:00 a.m. Nate is the president of SALUTE.

The annual DD Awareness and Advocacy Day is March 5 at the Ohio Statehouse. Scheduled speakers include Governor Mike Dewine and Department of DD Director Jeff Davis. If you are not attending you can still watch the event live on the Ohio Channel website.

Humanware Webinar: Accessing, Editing & Submitting Assignments with Prodigi Connect 12/MATT Connect through Gmail & Google Classroom

2019 Ohio Small & Rural Schools Annual State Conference @ Nationwide Hotel and Conference Center

Registration is open for #DisruptEdLearning, the annual Ohio Small & Rural Schools Collaborative statewide conference. The event is scheduled for March 8 at the Nationwide Hotel and Conference Center in Lewis Center, Ohio. The Ohio Small & Rural Collaborative is a partner with Future Ready Ohio. The conference is a valuable learning opportunity featuring national small- and rural-school leaders, powerful breakout sessions and partner demonstrations. The target audience is all educational leaders interested in collaboration and the collective impact of supporting each other to transform schools.

Featured speakers and presenters will include Dr. John Conrath from The Ohio State University, Dr. Bobby Moore from the Epic Impact Group, and Stephanie Meeks from the Ohio Department of Education. Learning Blade, Ohio State, INFOhio, and breakout sessions for teachers led by teachers will also be featured.

ODE Adolescent Literacy Regional Meeting for Region 1 @ Educational Service Center of Lake Erie West

This session offers a day of regional learning and discussion to explore the adolescent literacy component of Ohio’s Plan to Raise Literacy Achievement. Led by Ohio Department of Education Adolescent Literacy Specialists, participants will explore the definition of adolescent literacy and learn how to create a culture of learning to promote higher achievement for adolescents.

The presenters will provide an overview of content area literacy, disciplinary literacy, and individualized intensive interventions that are focused on literacy. Participants will engage in planning activities to address making adolescent literacy achievement a priority in their districts and buildings.

This session is designed solely for leadership teams of grades 4 through 12 superintendents, curriculum directors, special education directors, building administrators, literacy coaches, and teacher leaders.

No lunch provided; bring Local Literacy Plan if you have one. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. Session starts promptly at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 3:30 pm.

Spring Severe Weather Awareness Week, March 17-23

As part of Ohio’s Spring Severe Weather Awareness Week, and in conjunction with the Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness, Ohio will conduct a statewide tornado drill to test its Emergency Alert System at 9:50 a.m. on Wednesday, March 20. Learn more online.

Using the BrailleNote Touch with Google Classroom @ AT & AEM Center

The AT&AEM Center has partnered with Humanware to offer a 4 hour hands-on workshop, intended to increase skills in Google Classroom using the BrailleNote Touch. Use of Google Classroom in K-12 settings continues to grow. Many students who read and write braille can find access to this application a challenge. Using a mobile version of the Classroom application with the BrailleNote Touch is a potential solution to this challenge. Participants will learn to navigate the mobile Classroom application, download and edit various assignments and then submit to their teachers.

School Improvement Quadrant Meeting
Mar 21 @ 3:00 pm – 6:30 pm

The Office of Community Schools will be hosting four School Improvement Quadrant Meetings in March. These meetings are open for sponsors and community schools that were required to complete and submit a Community School Improvement Plan. Schools identified as a priority school or received a needs intervention for special education must send a representative to one of these meetings.

The Region 1 meeting will take place at the Educational Service Center of Lake Erie West on March 21, 2019.

Introduction to Connect 12 and MATT Connect @ OCALI

The AT&AEM Center has partnered with Humanware to offer a training session to introduce features of the Connect 12 and MATT Connect devices that combine a digital magnifier with an Android tablet.

This hands-on workshop will allow participants to capture and view printed materials, utilize the distance camera, import pdf documents and annotate on worksheets using writing, typing and highlighting functions. The session will be facilitated by Jim Sullivan, Humanware Representative.
