Phonemic Awareness & the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Program

Phonemic Awareness

Phonemic awareness is the understanding that spoken words are made up of individual sounds called phonemes. A child who is phonemically aware is able to isolate sounds, manipulate sounds, and blend and segment sounds into spoken and written words.

According to the Ohio Early Learning Assessment results and regional early literacy data, a majority of students are not proficient readers. To support teachers at the preschool, kindergarten, and lower primary levels, the State Support Team Region 1 (SSTR1) is sponsoring this professional development opportunity to support students’ acquisition of basic literacy skills.

Half-Day Morning Session on October 18, 2018

This half-day morning session will offer teachers information and resources based upon the phonemic awareness curriculum developed by Dr. Michael Heggerty. SSTR1 consultant Angie Schaal, Ed.S., will provide teachers with Dr. Heggerty’s materials that contain systematic lessons that are easily implemented in the classroom. The materials benefit all students, including those with disabilities and those who are struggling, through multiple exposure to phonemic awareness lessons. The curriculum was designed to increase the literacy skills of young children and develop a lifelong love for learning.

Free Phonemic Awareness Curricula

Participants will receive a free Phonemic Awareness Curricula, authored by Dr. Michael Heggerty. Participants select the book that is appropriate for their level, pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, or primary (grades one and two), when completing the online registration form.

This session will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on October 18, 2018, at the Educational Service Center of Lake Erie West, located at 2275 Collingwood Boulevard in Toledo, Ohio.
