Emergent Literacy Series, Birth to Age 5: Laying the Foundation for Literacy Success

The Office of Approaches to Teaching and Professional Learning, collaborating with the Office of Early Learning and School Readiness, will host a three-part Birth–Age 5 Emergent Literacy Series in fall 2019.

The series consists of

  • Part 1 – Introduction to Emergent Literacy and Teaching Early Phonological Awareness,
  • Part 2 – Developing Oral Language and Vocabulary for Emergent Literacy, and
  • Part 3 – Building Print Awareness Through Interactive Read-Alouds.

Find more information about each part on the OCCRA website and in OH|ID (formerly STARS).

Participants will be expected to attend all three sessions to receive credit through OCCRA’s Ohio Professional Registry. They will earn additional hours by taking part in connect to the classroom activities that apply the concepts learned in the sessions to classroom practice. Again, to earn credit, participants must complete all three sessions and take part in the Connect to the Classroom work.

The series is for preschool teachers, paraprofessionals, supervisors, childcare workers, kindergarten teachers and others looking to build emergent literacy skills in children from birth through age 5. The series is facilitated by Carolyn Turner and Michelle Elia, from Ohio Literacy Leads. The presenters will conduct all three parts at four locations across the state. Each session is from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Registration is through OCCRA using the corresponding ST numbers or through OH|ID by using the Keyword emergent. There are no registration fee.

For additional information on what the sessions cover, email Michelle Elia or Carolyn Turner. For information on registration in OCCRA or STARS please email Brenda Lawrence.
